Statement on the present Middle East Crisis.
The International Interfaith Centre expresses its deep distress at the loss of life and destruction of homes and infrastructure that is presently taking place in the Middle East. Children, women and the elderly, the most vulnerable members of society, are predominantly those affected. It is the responsibility of people of all faiths to raise their voices for an immediate and effective cease-fire and to work towards a just solution. The greater the influence political and religious leaders have, the greater their moral responsibility. Consequently, the IIC calls especially on such leaders to support a peaceful settlement and to actively aid those who are suffering.
The use of violence leads to an increasing spiral of violence, not to justice and peace. Life is sacred for all faiths. While some religions do have a concept of a 'Just War', there are strict limitations, for example a clear distinction is made between combatants and civilians. No religion supports either suicide bombers or the deliberate targeting of residential areas regardless, of the circumstances.
